Reviewed in the United States on July 26, I was very happy to find this insert to replace the old yellowed and cracked insert that I had been using for many years.
My birds are ecstatic. I would suggest to buyers, however, that when putting the three pieces of the insert together you double-check the position of the metal plate in the middle section. Make sure the two prongs are facing downward. Mine was facing upward, and the tube didn't fit in properly. I kept pushing on the feeder lid to try to close it, not realizing the problem until I ended up bending the metal plate luckily, it was easy to bend back.
Also, by putting excess pressure on the insert, I'm afraid I may have weakened the corners. Guess I'll chalk it up to "user error," but I think it behooves the company to ship the plate in the proper position. Top critical review. I'm very happy with the replacement feeder inserts. They're well constructed and fit together snug and perfectly into the feeder. They also incorporate a new design that works without modification of the old feeder. There are aluminum dividers that fit between the chambers and a central tube which runs down the middle of the assembly allowing seed to be refilled into just the two lower chambers.
This makes it possible to load a different seed in the top chamber. I've got sunflower seed in the bottom chambers and thistle seed in the top. I find this central tube design a handy improvement. Even better, you have the option to assemble the three chambers without the dividers or tube. This allows you to use the assembly like the original design as one tall seed chamber.
Since this is a replacement part of a "squirrel proof" bird feeder, I should mention that I don't consider this feeder squirrel "proof". Squirrels can get their noses through the mesh and into the seed port just far enough to get a seed. I've watched as closely as I can and guess that the squirrel is probably sticking out his tongue and getting a seed to stick to the tip.
This is a very slow process and the result is I'm not losing a significant amount of seed to the squirrels. With the two lower chambers filled with black-oil sunflower seed, I have to refill the feeder every other day.
This is with constant activity at the feeder during daylight hours. If you want a truly squirrel proof feeder, spend the money and get a Yankee Flipper. A bear tore my Yankee Flipper apart so I've been using this feeder as a backup waiting for the snow to melt so I can find all the parts to the Flipper. I'm very happy with the product. It's given new life to my feeder. These seem to last a long time but because it's my theory the Sun light will eventually make them brittle, if a high wind knocks them down, they will crack.
We're talking years and by that time, they have become scratched and a bit dull so the new ones always look great. Instead of hanging them with hooks, I've taken to using Lock Links so they can't be knocked off. Oh and a bear got one set. Neither the inserts or the wire birdfeeder or even the black iron pipe holding up the birdfeeder survived that one. One person found this helpful. The first set came in a crushed box and the product was damaged.
I haven't used them for any length of time, but they seem much more brittle than the ones I'm replacing. They feel fragile. Time will tell. Certainly, they are nice and new clear as compared to my 15yo ones which have taken on an opaque biege hue. The new set has dividers for feeding different types of seed at the same time.
Not for me. I just tossed them. The birds empty this thing in a day this time of year. I'm feeding straight black oil SS.
I read another reviewed who blocked off several of the holes and I baulked at first. Admittedly, I taped up the top 4 holes and I like the results. The delivery was prompt and the quality of the inserts was great. It put the birds' favorite Perky-Pet feeder back in service after the the original inserts and binding tape repairs failed. It was cheaper than replacing the entire feeder, although the price seemed high.
It still made sense since the original metal cage was in excellent condition after several years of service. My abundant squirrel population has not defeated this model. Knowing the I could replace the insert was reassuring and led me to purchase a second feeder of this model. I have tried other feeders - including some snazzy truly high-priced models - but this if my favorite.
I am always so happy when I can repair a much-loved item rather than just adding it to the landfill. Our Hyde Park feeder's inside chambers had cracked and crumbled over the years and I did a quick Google search before tossing it and was so happy to be led to Amazon for these replacement parts.
The feeder itself was a somewhat expensive squirrel-proof feeder bought years ago. The inserts seem like a better quality than the original but only time will tell. They can be used with the clear, fill tube down the center which allows 3 different seed blends to be used in the one feeder or just remove the tube to fill the feeder with all the same seed. These made an old feeder usable again. Needed to replace the inserts of an old Hyde mfg.
The pieces were really hard to fit into each other so I rubbed a very thin film of Vaseline on the edge of each of the square pieces. These inserts don't seem as durable as the old ones but were the only replacements I could find. Time will tell but right now they are serving their purpose as hoped.
I didn't use the dividers or the center tube. The squirrels knocked down 2 of our feeders, destroying several inserts. Because our squirrels are pretty rambunctious we decided to order two sets of 3.
They came quickly and are perfect replacements for those damaged. This is an addendum to my original review. I have again ordered two more sets of 3 each. Obviously we have very destructive squirrels.
